Azimut and S10 flagship premiere

Azimut and Volvo Penta, this time we will show them to you in a completely different side. We are at the Milan Triennale, a sanctuary of design. The context of the Azimut event is Design Week. What doese Design Week mean? Imagine the entire world map decanted in Milan for the Salone del Mobile. The ‘Fuori Salone’, or ‘Design Week’, is the apotheosis of contemporary art associated with industrial design. Azimut has capitalized on the welding between two of the best Made in Italy products to present the S10, the flagship of the S series.

La Dolce Vita 3.0, Yachting in Milan

In the wake of Fellini’s benchmark, the installation in front of the Triennale was called La Dolce Vita 3.0, Yachting in Milan.

First passage: the contemplation of the S7, a 21-metre (69 feet) pleasure boat that stands out, in an almost dystopian way, in a space on the grass.

Second passage: immersion in virtual reality, on the cockpit, in the open sea.

Third step: If you had the patience to wait for the twilight, you were witness a performance of light design that emphasizes the ‘anatomical’ details of the boat (picture above).

About Azimut

First of all Giovanna Vitelli, ceremonial master and deus ex machina of the event. Azimut is sailing towards the middle of the century. The launch of the S10 is in fact scheduled for 2019, when Azimut will turn off 50 candles on the cake. Vitelli reminded us of two revolutionary contributions of Azimut to the world of pleasure boating. The epiphany of light in the cabins, thanks to the glass surfaces. It was precisely in the jubilee year of 2000 that it took place. Finally, innovation of the bow straight. Benetti converted the bow from oblique to starboard. A strategy followed by more than half of the boats over 40 meters.

Later, the designers Alberto Mancini and Vincenzo De Cotiis took the chair.

Carbon fibers were under the spot. With its exposed fibre, carbon marks the borders of the lateral, angled and bow oriented fins to give an intense sensation of dynamism. The carbon fiber also replaces the classic steel manrope, which takes on a rather gun-like appearance and extends up to the bow and acts as a perfect containment of the sunbridge.

Giovanna Vitelli said

«From ten years now we have been searching, out of the industry, for leading architects who introduce a new language on our yachts, with completely different stylistic codes, expressed by evolving and contemporary projects. We have thus created new paradigms that embrace the boat object with the most recent stylistic and lifestyle evolution, following a more contemporary and current way of living the spaces on board».

Azimut and Volvo Penta Ips

You don’t see it, but the S7 is powered by a triple IPS 1050, capable of delivering 800 horsepower. Multiple installations allowed Volvo to expand its horizons and also take root in the low entry range of megayachts.

The inboard engine is D13. The 12.8-litre hexacylinder has exported the common rail to water, overhead camshaft and two-stage turbocharging. It turns to 2,300 and declares a pme in the wake of the Volvo tradition: not exaggerated values associated with the strength of the monoblock. In one word: reliability.

About S10

The shipbuilding perspective of the S10 was the perception of space. Alberto Mancini says that they did everything they could so that the sea could be perceived everywhere, without changing the layout. Moreover, this hull was originally designed for long navigation, not for the hotel industry itself.

Giovanna Vitelli herself spoke on this concept and on the relationship between designer and Azimut. In the Azimut-Benetti Group, she is responsible for product development: «It is often a continuous tension, because dialogue is sometimes not easy. We continue yet to do so because we believe in this fruitful relationship: a mutual exchange between the shipyard that knows the maritime essence of the object, the owner’s needs and the style brought by the architect. Only in this way does the form, with its stylistic functions, contemplate the functions».

Passing the floor to designer

Among the surpriser elements, there is the ornamental use of glass fiber, wich Vincenzo De Cotiis who is a passionate about new materials, often marked by time and wear, has used for years to create objects with organic shapes and material surfaces. For the first time, therefore, the fiberglass is ennobled and assumes a non-structural but purely decorative function.

The design philosophy behind the S10 is  tied to the concept of total onboard livreability, based on three fundamental images.

The firts image is taht of a big, classically-styled megasailer, on wich the slightly lowered cockpit amidships represents the fulcrum of social interaction, intended ad the perfect refuge for relaxing and sheltering from the sun.

The second is that of a refined modern villa on the sea, with multi-level terraces leading gradually down to the water.

Finally, the superstructure stands out for the horizontal development of its surfaces.
