Volvo Studio: a place to be

Volvo Studio is based in Milan and, in the semantics of Volvo Car, it is a symbol of advanced thinking. We do not want to venture into a domain that’s not in line with Diesel International editorial themes, but Volvo Studio showed itself to the usual Christmas press event of Volvo Penta. Malin Schwarz, Brand Senior Vice President, and Nicola Pomi, Vice President of Marine Europe (the both in the middle, in the picture below) attended the event and gave a speech.

A gorgeous skyline

Things to say (and to write) are, therefore, not lacking. Volvo Studio is really close to Bosco Verticale buildings (‘Vertical Wood’), recognized in 2015 as the most beautiful and innovative skyscraper in the world from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and also reported by the International Highrise Award. In our point of view Volvo Studio looks like an ‘aesthetic concept’. Here the cars on display are not for sale but ‘organisms’ included in the reproduction of a Scandinavian ecosystem: the wooden sections on the walls are reminiscent of the birch forests; the floor recalls the texture of the granite cliffs; the ceiling is ‘iridescent’ and able to reproduce the northern lights. The interaction between the different levels of the Volvo brand took place under the banner of sustainability.

Sustainability. The Götebörg refrain

The Volvo Group, passing from Ford to Geely, didn’t lose its mark, which could be summarized in the slogan: ‘Volvo Cars? Volvo Care‘. The year 2019 is imminent and will bring a wave of eco-sustainability. Of course for industrial diesel engines it means that Stage V is taking effect, Volvo has set the Big Bang of electrification for the same date. From 2019, therefore, only electrified cars will be produced, which means both hybrid and electric. The single-use plastic will be banished from Volvo offices in the perspective of 2025, when a quarter of the plastic used at least will derive from recycled material.

The keywords are: connectivity, electrification, autonomous driving.

What will become of this trio in the Volvo Penta point of view for nautical and industrial applications?

EFFICIENCY IS THE PARADIGM. AMER YACHTS

Volvo Studio. Penta gets on the stage

And now we give the floor to Schwarz and Pomi. The IMO Tier 3 for work boating is the daily routine of Volvo Penta, with over 20,000 hours of operations behind it. What will become of the hybrid? From 2021 it will be listed for the commercial sector, from 2022 for pleasure boats. The heart of this system is the IPS, which has crossed the milestone of 20 thousand units in operation.

The word ‘hybrid‘, in the Volvo Penta language, is associated with two other concepts: extended electric drive auto docking zero emissions and autocharging.

HYBRID IPS WAY OF LIFE

Self-docking replicates the approach to autonomous ground vehicles. A series of sensors positioned on the platform can recognize the boat’s signals and authorize the docking. About this topic:

WHEN VOLVO TALKS ABOUT EASY BOATING…

Connectivity, among other functions, allows immediate diagnostics and accelerates maintenance times. An addition that will be available in the agricultural, off-road and stationary applications of Volvo Penta.

FPT Industrial: let’s go, XC13

The XC13 surely sounds agnostic in FPT Industrial’s unofficial nomenclature; it comes, indeed, with a tripartite certification: Euro 6E (winking an eye at the upcoming Euro 7), methane gas and also biofuel, with a link to hydrogen. Andrea Abbà, FPT’s product marketing manager, told us about dialogui...
