The two companies aim at strengthening their market position by forming a 50/50 joint venture. According to the official statement, «MTU Cooltech Power Systems will produce backup generator sets powered by MTU Series 1600, 2000 and 4000 engines for applications including but not limited to hospitals, airports, mining, semiconductors, telecoms and the rapidly growing data centre market, which has recently received a significant boost from the Chinese government’s newly announced New Infrastructure development plan, a programme launched by the central government to accelerate the digital transformation of the economy».

Another agreement, with Siemens, for producing battery containers

Furthermore, Rolls-Royce Power Systems is increasing its capacities for producing battery containers. From 2021, the MTU EnergyPacks are to be manufactured in the Siemens-Technopark in Ruhstorf, Bavaria, where Rolls-Royce already has a production site. The tenancy agreement has just been signed.

The expansion of the production site is to form part of Rolls-Royce’s new Microgrid Solutions division, established by Rolls-Royce at the beginning of the year when it acquired a majority stake in the Berlin-based energy storage specialist Qinous, now operating under the name Rolls- Royce Solutions Berlin.
