Man Energy Solutions thinks alternative, and it does so in two ways, both using ICE as the common denominator: LNG and dual-fuel. We start from the agreement with the Greek Construction Company, TERNA, a 100% subsidiary of the GEK TERNA Group.

Man Energy Solutions thinks alternative: TERNA and LNG

TERNA has awarded MAN Energy Solutions the contract for the engineering of, and supplying services to, an LNG truck-loading infrastructure project. The pilot station is part of the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA) development programme for the Revithoussa LNG Cryogenic Facilities Terminal at the Gulf of Megara, west of Athens. The terminal has a storage capacity of 225,000 m3 and is a strategical milestone for Greece, providing security of energy supply, operational flexibility in the transmission system, and increased capability to meet peak gas-demand.

Thanassis Papaioannou, Head of Turbomachinery and Power Plants of MAN Energy Solutions in Greece, noted: «We are pleased to bring our cryogenic capabilities to DESFA by joining forces with TERNA, one of the leading construction companies in the country. The implementation of this project will create new growth opportunities in areas where there is no existing gas network.»

Carsten Dommermuth, Senior Manager Business Development at MAN Energy Solutions, referred to the importance of this kind of LNG hub: «With the availability of central storage facilities for liquefied methane, natural gas now becomes available – independent of pipelines – to support the decarbonisation of the power industry with the cleanest fossil fuel available to the market. Furthermore, this kind of project is also important in terms of future readiness for the use of clean, green hydrogen.» MAN Energy Solutions acts as a global EPC partner covering the entire value chain for LNG-to-Power.

 10 × MAN B&W 7G80ME-GI Mk9.5 dual-fuel engines

“MAN Energy Solutions has won the order to supply 10 × MAN B&W 7G80ME-GI Mk9.5 dual-fuel engines to a series of 10 × 300,000-dwt VLCCs distributed among shipowners, Advantage Tankers (4), AET (3) and International Seaways (3). Another new segment for the ME-GI, the newbuildings will operate globally as charters for a major oil company. HSD Engine will construct the engines in Korea, while DSME will build the vessels, again in Korea. The new order follows a slew of recent orders announced globally for the engine in recent months. MAN Energy Solutions stated in January 2021 that its low-speed, dual-fuel references in their entirety then exceeded 360 units, with the ME-GI recording over 1.5 million operating hours on LNG alone.

ME-GI engine technology

With the ME-GI engine, two-stroke development has taken a step further by combining the unique properties of multi-fuel combustion and the well-known reliability of MAN Energy Solutions ME-engine. The Diesel principle not only provides the ME-GI engine with high operational stability and efficiency, but also ensures 100% stable and reliable operation during load changes on gas with just normal additions of pilot-oil amounts. Furthermore, the ME-GI operational principles features a seamless change-over between gas operation and diesel operation The ME-GI engine is the most environmentally-friendly technology available within the two-stroke engine segment.

FPT Industrial: let’s go, XC13

The XC13 surely sounds agnostic in FPT Industrial’s unofficial nomenclature; it comes, indeed, with a tripartite certification: Euro 6E (winking an eye at the upcoming Euro 7), methane gas and also biofuel, with a link to hydrogen. Andrea Abbà, FPT’s product marketing manager, told us about dialogui...
